Canola Fields in York, Western Australia
Walking in fields of yellow.
You can see the abundant fields of yellow in regional Western Australia from mid August through most of September. Most canola fields you see are farming crop and in no way can you walk through the crop or trespass on anyone’s property in order to get some shots.
Where to see canola?
PetTeet Park, just outside of York, WA (about 1.5 hours away from Perth CBD) has a large field available for you to wander through, taking as many snaps as you please. There is an entrance fee for PetTeek Park, but you can stay as long as you like during their opening hours and no bookings required.
Check PetTeek Park Facebook page to keep informed.
If you don’t wish to take photos in the fields but rather of the fields, you can take many drives along roads leading to places such as Toodyay, York and Northam or even along Albany Highway. Mount Brown Lookout in York is another great place to see some of the fields, albeit from quite a distance.
What is Canola?
Canola or Rapeseed is grown for it’s seeds which are then crushed into an oil to became canola or vegetable oil and margarines which is popular for cooking with. Canola oil is also used industrially in cosmetics, adhesives, paint and many more products.
It is cropped only once a year, so if you get the chance and you want to visit, make sure you get in, in time!
